What an ACA plan is

A health plan that follows the rules of the Affordable Care Act. In practice: it covers the essentials, it can't turn you down for your medical history, and it can cost far less than the sticker price.

What makes an ACA plan different

Before the ACA, an insurer could deny you coverage for a condition you already had, or charge you more for it. An ACA plan can do neither. It also can't put a lifetime cap on what it pays.

  • You can't be turned down for a pre-existing condition. Diabetes, asthma, cancer, pregnancy — none of it excludes you or raises your premium.
  • It covers 10 categories of essential benefits by law — not something each insurer decides. what an ACA plan covers.
  • Federal preventive services carry no cost sharing when you use an in-network provider.
  • You may qualify for financial help based on your income and household size. subsidies and tax credits.

The tiers: bronze, silver, gold and platinum

Every plan at a given tier covers the same essential benefits. What changes is how the cost splits between you and the insurer.

  • Bronze — lowest monthly premium, highest deductible. Makes sense if you barely use medical care and want protection against something serious.
  • Silver — the middle ground. It's the only tier where cost-sharing reductions apply if you qualify, which can make it cheaper than a bronze plan in total cost.
  • Gold and platinum — higher premium, lower deductible and copays. Worth it if you use care often or take regular medication.

On and off the Marketplace

An ACA plan bought through the Health Insurance Marketplace is the only route to an advance tax credit. A plan bought directly from an insurer off the Marketplace can meet the same coverage rules, but gives no access to that subsidy.

Harbor Lane works with Marketplace plans, which is where the financial help is.

Who can enroll

You can enroll if you live in the United States, are a citizen or lawfully present, and aren't incarcerated. You don't need a job, and your medical history doesn't matter.

There's a window of time to do it: enrollment periods.
